I originally got involved with philosophy in college because I love ideas. Historically, the academy is where ideas are discussed, assumptions exposed, and a sustained reasoned exchange takes place. Yet, lately, some ideas are not welcome in the academy. Some topics are off limits, regarded as settled, or worse, ridiculed rather than discussed. For example, discussion of the existence and nature of God is off limits in the secular university setting. In my fifteen years at the secular university in the disciplines of Philosophy and Religious Studies, where one would expect to discuss matters of ultimate reality, I have had one discussion about God in the classroom setting as a student. Yet, ideas are irrepressible and will find an outlet.  In the case of discussing ideas about God, there are voluntary campus associations that seek to carry on the tradition of rational discussion of the existence and nature of God in the university setting.

A few of months ago, I wrote an article on my blog toward the subject of “The Apologist’s Life of Worship.”  In that article I emphasized importances of the life of worship in every believer’s life, and how it incorporates not just the emotions of the heart and the soul and not just the confines of the worship service one attends.  I also shared that there is a need for not just our hearts and souls, but also for our minds to be invited to worship. This current article springboards off of that subject and was further spawned by something I noticed while attending a worship service not too long ago.[1]

Our Spring Speaker Event was a resounding success!!  Olson Auditorium was 3/4 full which translates to about 150 people in attendance.  Mr. Warner's presentation was VERY interesting and engaging.  He was one of the most talented presenters you will ever see.  Several faculty who were in attendance commented to that effect.  And his message was so clearly presented.

He walked the audience through the basics of evidential thinking using his unique 25-year background in criminal investigation and case-making.  He established the "ground rules" we use in a court of law to send people to prison for life or to death row.  Then he applied the same rules and evidential thinking to the testimonies found in the New Testament.  In particular, he explored:

1. Present? (Were the disciples even there at the time of Jesus, and in the same manner as reported?)
2. Verified? (Have any details given in these accounts been checked archeologically?)
3. Accurate? (Has the main message survived to this day in spite of the many textual variants?)
4. Unbiased? (Did the disciples report what they saw in spite of poverty, persecution, and ridicule?)

The answers to all four questions were demonstrated to be "Yes!"  Essentially, we have an accurate account of Jesus' life, teachings, miracles, and miraculous resurrection! 

But that doesn't complete the picture.  IF this book - the New Testament - tells of all these things, and they really did happen and they really ARE true, then the ramifications are HUGE.

Ratio Christi has helped me understand the logic behind different groups of people, specifically those prevalent at this time, which are moral relativists. Our weekly studies have provided me a strong group of people whom I can ask questions pertaining to lack of faith in Christianity. Each session further improved and refines my logic, which is essential in my evangelism as I speak to "tolerate-everything" people. I anticipate future meetings so I can learn about and speak better to other people groups. - Jonathan Arroyo

Ratio Christi has helped me with personal evangelism last semester. The President of the Atheist club, Igor and I have been building a relationship since he started coming to the Ratio Christi. He and I have been engaging in friendly discussions. I hope truth through these conversations will bring him to believe in God. - Josh Venegas

Ratio Christi has helped me learn more about God and how to defend my faith. Previously I never thought about it until this year that it would be important to know about the case for Christianity and answering tough questions. Ratio Christi has helped me share my faith with others because I learned other peoples' worldviews or religious beliefs. By learning other peoples' worldviews I'm able to articulate the gospel clearly. I've always wanted answers, truthful and correct answers, to people's questions about Christianity. I used to feel attacked by people's objection, but Ratio Christi has given me the truth and shown me that people who object to Christianity aren't mad; they are generally ignorant of the truth.
