Report from Simon Brace, Regional Director of Ratio Christi in South Africa
The Ratio Christi South Africa family is growing! We now have two functioning chapters (North West University in Potchefstroom and Stellenbosch University in Stellenbosch) and serious interest in establishing chapters at four more universities. Our first annual symposium was an attempt to bring together all interested parties in order to seek the Lord, forge relationships, and become better ambassadors of Christ.
We gathered from the 17th to 20th of November in the beautiful Vredefort Dome just outside of Potchefstroom. This World Heritage Site is believed to be the largest meteorite impact zone in the world. It was a wonderful setting for a hike in God’s marvelous creation, presentations on numerous apologetic topics, worship and prayer, delicious meals shared together, making new friends, engaging in dialogue till the early hours of the morning, and even witnessing the immensity of an African thunderstorm.
Many of the students traveled long distances to attend the event. The instant bond between young people who share faith in Christ, and an interest in apologetics was quite remarkable. They arrived as strangers and left as friends, encouraged and equipped to share their faith on campus. Please pray that God will continue this work in their hearts and minds to the glory of His name.
Through many divine appointments the Lord provided a wonderful team of speakers for this event. Not only did they engage and challenge the students in their presentations, they were also willing to debate, discuss, and answer a plethora of questions. You can read more about the topics here. We hope that these men and women of God were confirmed and encouraged in their academic work for the Lord. We are so grateful that God has surrounded us with such talented, faithful partners in the cause of the Gospel.
We gathered as a small group of like-minded believers, but we were keenly aware of the big potential of this ministry. Please pray that God will use this event as part of a great work on the turbulent, secular South African university campuses. May the generation who is to lead our country next encounter Him in the place where they might least expect to do so.
We are already looking forward to the Ratio Christi South Africa Symposium of 2017!
