Gerry Abraham Ekepo: Legatus Christi Recipient

I was born and raised in The Gambia and lived there for 15 years before moving to the United States with my family in 2015. Please let me know if there is any other information I can provide.

  • When did you come to Christ as Lord and Savior, and how did that come about?

I came to Christ at a young age while growing up in a Christian household. At first, much of my faith felt like going through the motions: attending church, reading the Bible, and participating in church activities. As I grew older, however, I began to understand that following Christ was not simply a routine, but a way of life. Looking back, I see my upbringing as an embodiment of Proverbs 22:6, as God used my family and church community to guide me toward a personal relationship with Him.

  • In your church youth group, how much did you learn about the Christian faith and reasons to believe?

In my church youth group here in the United States, there was not a strong focus on the study of the Word. The teaching was usually connected lightly to the scripture read during the service. Much of the emphasis was on conversation, community, fellowship, fun, and activities. While that helped build relationships, I did not receive much training in understanding the reasons behind the Christian faith within the youth group.

  • How did you become interested in apologetics, and how did you get involved with Ratio Christi?

I had limited exposure to apologetics before joining Ratio Christi, though I had gained a basic understanding of it through my Introduction to Bible class. One Monday evening, while taking one of my regular walks, I happened to stop by the MDA, where Ratio Christi was holding a meeting. I became interested, attended the meeting, and continued coming from then on.

  • What impact has the Ratio Christi ministry had on your walk with God and your personal ministry?

Ratio Christi has had a significant impact on my walk with God and my personal ministry. One of the greatest strengths I have gained through RC is exposure to different worldviews and the ability to better articulate why I believe what I believe. It has helped me understand how my faith shapes the way I view the world, its values, and the situations I encounter. RC has also helped me learn how Christians should respond with truth, grace, and wisdom. It has been a sharpening tool in my life, especially as I have served in ministry and grown in speaking and leadership.

  • What is this RC chapter like?

One of the key people in our RC chapter is Bill Scott, our Resident Chapter Director. He is like a friendly neighborhood dad, someone students can go to for direction, advice, encouragement, or simply to spend time with. His involvement in students’ lives, along with his emphasis on community nights at the beginning of each semester, has played a major role in making our RC chapter as communal and relational as it is today.

When I first joined, the community aspect was present, but it was not as developed as it is now. Today, we have weekly meetings on Tuesdays that usually begin with prayer, followed by dinner, worship, and a presentation or panel discussion. Afterward, we often continue the night at a café, where conversations continue around the presentation or branch into other topics such as baptism, denominational differences, and Christian living.

  • What were some of your favorite areas of involvement with your local RC chapter?

Some of my favorite areas of involvement have been helping set up and tear down for meetings, participating in community nights, helping with event planning, and, most of all, serving in the worship team.

  • What does the Legatus Christi award mean to you?

The Legatus Christi award is a meaningful encouragement to me. It reminds me that my service in Ratio Christi has been for the glory of God and not for selfish gain. It is also a reminder to continue walking faithfully with God, using the opportunities and knowledge He has given me to serve others and point them to Christ.

  • How do you envision taking the apologetics you have learned through Ratio Christi into your future endeavors?

The apologetics I have learned through Ratio Christi has given me greater confidence to speak boldly about my faith. It has helped me become less hesitant about sharing the knowledge I have gained and standing firm in Christ. I see it as a strong foundation for where God will lead me in the future.

  • What are your short- and long-term career, ministry, or mission plans?

My short-term goal is to continue my education by pursuing a Master of Divinity. As for my long-term plans, I am not completely certain where God will lead me, but I am confident that He is directing my path. I desire to remain faithful and available for ministry wherever He calls me.

  • Would you consider coming back to work with your RC chapter, starting one at another school, or working with RC in any other capacity?

I would very much love to come back and serve with the RC chapter at HCU. I would also be open to helping at another chapter if needed. Ratio Christi has been a blessing in my life, and I would be glad to support the ministry in whatever capacity I can.

  • What would you say to other students who might be considering getting involved in Ratio Christi, whether they are skeptics, seekers, or believers?

I would encourage them to give it a try. Everyone starts from somewhere, and Ratio Christi is welcoming to people at different points in their lives. Whether someone is a skeptic, seeker, or believer, RC provides a space for honest questions, thoughtful discussion, and meaningful community. If we want to engage and change the culture, we need places where truth can be discussed openly and graciously, and Ratio Christi offers that environment.
